When 141 Eyewear co-founder Shu-Chu Yamaguchi encountered eyewear designs featuring ULTEM on a trip to Japan, she immediately wanted to be among the vanguard of U.S. eyewear makers who employ the strong, lightweight material. Six designs from the philanthropic eyewear company’s fall 2013 collection now feature ULTEM frames.
The material is part of the ULTEM resin family of amorphous thermoplastic polyetherimide (PEI) resins manufactured by SABIC, an international manufacturer. Its strength, light weight, flexibility and temperature/chemical resistance made it a favorite of engineers who design medical and chemical instrumentation. These same properties attracted 141 Eyewear; frames made with ULTEM provide more comfort and can withstand extreme temperatures both hot and cold (-30 – 217 degrees), which means fewer adjustments and a longer-lasting fit.

Our retailers and their customers love having the new option.”
Ultem is featured in the Taylor and Naito (women); Alder (men); and Irving, Williams and Gadsby (unisex) styles from 141 Eyewear’s fall 2013 collection, available at select retailers in the U.S., Germany and Canada.
