Eye See Blueberries

One of the best parts of summer are the wonderful fresh fruits and vegetables available everywhere. One of our favorites has always been blueberries. Whether part of a smoothie or a pie, on top of a bowl of cereal or a bowl of ice cream, blueberries are delicious. Blueberries health benefits are huge and one of the primary benefits that most people do not realize is they can improve your vision, protect your eyes and even reverse some vision loss.

Blueberries are full of nutrients that improve your health on a cellular level. Many of the amazing health benefits of this superfood are well known, but their incredible effects on visual acuity and the prevention of macular degeneration are less often touted.

Blueberries’ health benefits are amazing nutritional properties, but the primary health benefit is their high levels of antioxidants. A serving of blueberries introduces more antioxidants into the body than most other fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are necessary for your body’s fight to reduce oxidation.

Oxidation ages your cells resulting not only in skin wrinkles but also degenerative diseases like macular degeneration. Antioxidants help prevent macular degeneration by supplying free radicals with the missing electron needed to balance the cell. This neutralizes them and renders them unable to damage the collagen matrix of healthy cells and tissues, such as the macula and macular pigment in your eyes. This not only prevents macular degeneration, but also other common causes of vision impairment, such as cataracts and glaucoma.

Blueberries pack 14 milligrams of vitamin C per cup. A cup of blueberries contains 80 international units of Vitamin A in every cup. Blueberries also pack a good dose of Zinc as well.

Anthocyanins, which are pigment molecules in blueberries and other plants, encourage the regeneration of key molecules in the eye involved in perceiving light. The concentration of anthocyanin in blueberries is so strong that it can sometimes reverse vision loss. No wonder the Japanese are so awed by blueberries health benefits, they’ve nicknamed the berries “the vision fruit.”

So, stop by your nearest farmers market this weekend and pick up a container, or two or three. Your taste buds and your eyes will thank you!
