Luxury optical brand Morgenthal Frederics just announced a new, limited-edition collaboration with creative design duo Dee & Ricky Jackson, just in time for Art Basel, before being released online and in other Morgenthal Frederics stores nationwide this Friday.
Limited to 25 unique frames – each 1of 1, and priced at $2,500 – the collaboration marries Morgenthal Frederics’ expert craftsmanship with a fun, irreverent sensibility that could only come from the minds of Dee & Ricky.
“Initially, we were inspired by interesting shapes and the infusion of color,” says Ricky Jackson. “We thought, ‘How cool would it be to bring our flavor and aesthetic to the Morgenthal Frederics brand?’” Adds brother Dee, “We are known for our use of Lego-inspired bricks, and to be able to translate this into buffalo horn was insane. I don’t think it’s ever been done before.”
Indeed, individual bricks of natural buffalo horn complement the classic designs of Morgenthal Frederics, rendered in fun colors like Hot Caramel Night, Royal Blue Vanilla, Albino Royal Brick, and Cerulean Brick Pear. As with all Morgenthal Frederics products, each frame is individually handcrafted by artisans in Germany, using 12-18 layers of Indian water buffalo horn that are pressed and polished to showcase the natural beauty of the material. Altogether, they make for a bold collection of frames that are not only fashionable but naturally lightweight and sustainable.
The accompanying campaign, which features Dee & Ricky alongside Morgenthal Frederics’ Chief Creative Officer, Jeff Press, and designer, Riya Mehta, was inspired by the iconic 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
“We had so much fun creating each of these pieces with Dee and Ricky, and the campaign we shot further proves that. Just like candy, anything is possible – even with eyewear – as long as you are having fun,” says Press.
