To Do: Prepare For Random Acts of Kindness Day February 17

The Optical Journal - Optical News With Independent Views

February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day or World Kindness Day. This is the day to do nice things for somebody else, whether it is opening the door, driving a senior citizen to the grocery store or in your office offering a little extra. This might be the day you donate old eyeglasses, lenses or even call some of your unemployed patients for an eye health day.

The phrase may have been coined by Anne Herbert, who claims to have written “Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat at a Sausalito restaurant in 1982 or 1983

There is a national organization established in 1995 called Random Act of Kindness that has useful tips and ideas on how to make this day special and  promotes Random Acts throughout the world.

Other resources:

  • In 2006, a Free Hugs Campaign was made popular by a music video on YouTube.
  • is the home of Smile Cards and a portal of kindness stories, ideas, and online groups. It allows people to send random notes of kindness to others.
