Awards Ceremony at Transitions Academy Recognizes Broker’s Efforts to Communicate the Value of Vision Benefits to HR Customers and Employees
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 2, 2012 – Recognizing his consistent efforts to communicate the value of vision benefits to HR customers and their employees, Transitions Optical, Inc. has named Patrick Tibbs, financial services representative, Everence Financial Advisors of Goshen, Ind., as the 2011 Transitions Vision Benefits Broker of the Year. The second winner of this annual award, Tibbs was honored during a celebratory event – attended by an international audience of more than 1,300 optical industry professionals and 160 managed vision care industry professionals – at the 16th annual Transitions Academy at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando.
“I strongly believe that a quality vision benefit can serve as an efficient wellness tool for today’s employers, and as a way to provide extra value to employees and help them stretch their healthcare dollars,” Tibbs said. “I respect what Transitions Optical is doing to educate brokers and employers on vision plan potential, and I’m humbled to serve as the 2011 Vision Benefits Broker of the Year.”
Prior to being named the Transitions Vision Benefits Broker of the Year, Tibbs participated in a panel discussion with the two other finalists for the award, as part of the 5th annual education track for vision plan providers and benefits brokers at Transitions Academy. During the panel discussion, Tibbs spoke to his personal experience with vision issues, and his focus on educating employees about factors that could put them at risk for vision problems or eye diseases, such as age and certain ethnicities. Aside from advocating for regular eye exams, Tibbs’ said he is a strong proponent of premium eyewear options that can help employees see their best and protect long term eye health, which is why he includes Transitions® lenses and a high frame allowance in every vision plan he offers.
A regular Transitions Academy attendee, Tibbs participated in a broker panel discussion at the 2009 managed vision care track, and contributed to the resulting white paper Communicating the Value of Vision Benefits to Employers. He has used material from this and other clinical papers from Transitions Optical in his meetings with HR clients and employee enrollment meetings, and has also leveraged interactive education tools such as the Healthy Sight Calculator. In addition, Tibbs has authored bylines and blogs about vision benefits in multiple HR and broker trade publications, and even recently spoke on the topic at an HR industry conference.

Self-nominated or nominated by a vision plan provider, nominees for the 2011 Vision Benefits of the Year award were judged on their commitment to:
- • Promotion of vision benefits — positioning vision benefits as an integral part of the overall health benefits offering.
- • Promotion of vision wear — highlighting the vision wear elements of vision coverage to customers, and recommending vision plans that include photochromic lenses, which are clear indoors and darken outdoors to protect the eyes from damaging ultraviolet light and glare.
- • Education — educating about the importance of quality eye care and eyewear.
All three finalists received a trip for two to attend Transitions Academy, along with prizes and office items for themselves and their staff members. In addition, Tibbs will receive use of the official Transitions Vision Benefits Broker of the Year logo, a staff celebration and a trip for two to attend the Transitions Championship at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Florida, in March 2012.
