Win in Rain-Shortened Race Comes at His “Home Track” Daytona International Speedway

Almirola drove the Richard Petty Racing No. 43 US Air Force Ford Fusion to the win. In addition to battling an assemblage of the world’s best drivers equally determined in pursuit of victory, Almirola had to overcome four rain delays and multiple big wrecks to come out on top. In what was a rare occurrence at Daytona, the race was finally called due to rain on Lap 112 of 160, with Almirola out in front of the pack.
Mother Nature may have waved the checkered flag, but Almirola earned every bit of the hard-fought victory. He commented during post-race interviews that it felt especially good to earn his first Sprint Cup win on his “home track” in Florida, where he grew up sitting in the grandstands watching Daytona 500s and Firecracker 400s. “Man, I just took the No. 43 car to Victory Lane at Daytona!” said an excited Almirola. The victory puts Almirola and Richard Petty Racing in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
